Cloudland Canyon and Little River Canyon

Not sure what we should call a vacation from retirement, however we decided we’d head out to Cloudland Canyon in NW Georgia to do some backpacking and hiking.  It is a hikers mecca – lots of trails including some for bikes and horses.  It is a huge park comprised of two sections with waterfalls, huge canyon views and wooded forests.  There are three different types of backpackers camping areas – a walk in area that has a real bathhouse near it, a walk in area that has pit toilets and a hike in area with no facilities.  We walked many of the trails and had several fires at night (no smores though because they are not backpack friendly).

When we left we drove to NW Alabama and drove through DeSoto State Park which is very hilly with many wooded trails and then stopped at Little River Canyon National Preserve.  Little River was a real surprise – is unique because it flows for most of its length atop Lookout Mountain and has several waterfalls.  It was wonderful because we could hike down to the river and then walk the rocks for miles.

The Canyon was so pretty that when our friends, the Maddox’s, came to visit from Texas, we took them there for a day trip.
