1.5 vertical miles started all about the berries and ended about the….

We decided to stop fishing and process all of it so we knew how much space it was going to take in the camper before we head towards the lower 48.

Beautiful, interesting Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

Beautiful, interesting Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

Not fishing gave us time to get some hiking in so we went to the Kenai Wildlife Refuge  in Soldotna.  There is a fantastic new Visitor Center and some easy trails.  On the trails we found several types of red berries so we took pictures and a refuge biologist identified them.  We asked about wild blueberries and raspberries since we didn’t see any on the trails.  He told us about another couple trails that would be on our way to Anchorage that had wild blueberries, raspberries, watermelon berries, and highbush cranberries.

Wild Rose - Rose Hip

Wild Rose – Rose Hip has vitamin C and leaves of rose are edible

We are always wanting to increase our knowledge of survival  skills so thought we would look for and enjoy some wild berries.

Skyline Trail is rated very strenuous because from the trailhead the trail rises rapidly and doesn’t stop for 1600 feet of elevation gain. We headed up with our bear spray in hand since there are lots of warning signs at the trailhead and a women was attacked by a grizzly on a trail not too far from this one the previous day.

Well  our journey on the trail started about finding berries and then turned into making it to the top.  We didn’t see any bear activity and had great views along the trail as we stopped to gasp and wheeze along the way.  We also enjoyed some cranberries, watermelon berries, and raspberries.

We’ll be cleaning everything inside and out at our daughter’s house in Anchorage and then heading south to the lower 48 with frozen salmon filets, salmon jerky, poached salmon, and canned salmon.

Be looking for huckleberries as you travel down to the lower 48. They are my favorites!

We will – I’ve never had them so we’ll look for pictures and talk to some rangers along the way. Glenn is dreaming about a big piece of fresh fruit pie when we get to Washington.

Bear hunting sound like fun if you’re not the bait. Sound like fun. Keep going and posting updates.
